HD: Miller Street Memorial

Miller Street Memorial from hawaii on Vimeo.

On Jan. 17, 2008, 23-month-old Cyrus Belt was killed when a neighbor threw him from a bridge onto the H-1 freeway. The city of Honolulu was united in grief over the horrific murder of the young boy, whose all-too-brief and troubled life has since become the focus of intense scrutiny and debate.

While some people scramble to assign blame, hundreds of others have quietly convened every day at the spot where Cyrus Belt was killed. While some people are picking apart the people in his life, hundreds of strangers are simply moved by his tragic death, building a remarkable makeshift memorial of flowers, balloons, toys, letters, and other offerings.

The sprawling shrine to the toddler at the Miller Street pedestrian bridge has grown so large, local transportation officials are struggling to balance Honolulu's need to mourn with the safety of nearby residents and passing motorists.

These video clips were recorded on Tuesday, January 22, 2008.

HD: Hilo Takeoff

Hilo Takeoff from hawaii on Vimeo.

Departing Hilo International Airport (ITO) aboard go! Airlines flight 1039 on Wed., Jan. 2, 2008. It's an unusually clear day for the often gray and wet east side of the Big Island. Despite a dirty window and the glare of the sun, the view of the Hamakua Coast and Mauna Kea is impressive.

This is a short addition to my kids' collection of airplane videos, which includes: The above is the embedded video player from Vimeo, one of the only online video hosts to serve up HD content. HD: Imiloa Astronomy Center

Imiloa Astronomy Center from hawaii on Vimeo.

A visit to the fantastic Imiloa Astronomy Center at the University of Hawaii at Hilo on the Big Island. The center emphasizes both astronomy and Hawaiian culture, and notably uses the Hawaiian language throughout.

The low-light conditions definitely put the Xacti HD700 to the test. I could have bumped up the ISO to bring out a little more detail, but I was curious to see what the basic settings would produce. Of course, when we headed into the nearly pitch-black planetarium, the show was over.

HD: Unconferenz

Unconferenz from hawaii on Vimeo.

Unconferenz: A grassroots tech/Internet gathering to foster sharing and interaction amongst its participants. No keynotes, no talking heads, no sponsor pitches... just peer-to-peer knowledge sharing, spontaneous collaboration, and free flowing conversation. Sparked by Burt Lum and organized by everyone, Unconferenz was held on Jan. 12, 2008 at JAIMS in Hawaii Kai.

HD: Ahui O Manu

Ahui O Manu from hawaii on Vimeo.

A tour of "Ahui O Manu," the vacation rental in Volcano Village we stayed at during our New Year's 2008 trip to the Big Island. Charming, rustic, surrounded by wild ginger, towering Ohia trees, and giant Hapu’u ferns, and located on the edge of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

HD: Hawaii Flickr Meetup 2008

Hawaii Flickr Meetup 2008 from hawaii on Vimeo.

Hawaii Flickr users and fans kicked off 2008 with a potluck gathering at Kakaako Waterfront Park, site of the first official Hawaii Flickr Meetup in 2006. The motley crew of shutterbugs traded technical tips and showed off their gear, taking pictures all the while. From new users to seasoned pros, everyone enjoyed a beautiful afternoon full of food and friendly talkstory.

HD: Anuenue Playground

Anuenue Playground from hawaii on Vimeo.

The cool, green town of Waimea (a.k.a. Kamuela) is home to what could be Hawaii's best playground. Anuenue Playground, an incredible wooden wonderland, was built and is maintained by the entire community. It's a must-visit stop as we pass through on our way from Hilo to Kapa'au. Given the subject matter, there's a lot of shaky handheld camera work here (including an ill-advised trip down a slide), which doesn't necessarily mix with the HD widescreen format. You have been warned.
