Vlog 2.0

My Christmas present: the Sanyo Xacti HD700. There are a lot of good

options out there, but I was won over by the price and pocketable form-

factor (the camera you have with you always trumps the fancy equipment

you left at home), the tapeless HCSD media, the decent build quality

(except the SD card door), the basic in-camera editing (cuts and

joins), and especially the Mac-friendly H.264 encoding. Downsides are

a proprietary battery and a tight frame (so I got a cheap wide-angle

adapter). It was a tough call between the Xacti HD700 and the

waterproof Xacti E1... but I'm no watersports nut and I love the 720p

HD resolution. Even scaled and compressed for web delivery, it looks

great.

Vlog 2.0

Moving up to Final Cut Express 4. Up until now, belive it or not, my

favorite editing environment was QuickTime Pro, just cutting and

pasting and making title cards in Photoshop. I used iMovie HD a

little, and disliked iMovie '08 a lot. I needed something that was

simple and agile but didn't assume I was stupid. So far, so good. Sent

from my iPhone.

The Phoenix magnetic 0.45 wide angle digital camera lens (large

1.45"), $20 via an Amazon.com merchant, a must-have for the Sanyo

Xacti HD700, which has a frustratingly tight frame.

Bear Fans

The window display at Hänai Bear at Pearlridge. The University of

Hawaii Warriors football team went 12-0 this season, clinching their

first outright WAC championship and ranking 10th in the BCS. That

earned them a berth in the Sugar Bowl on New Year's Day. Go Bows! (The

team used to be called the Rainbows, which is very Mänoa but not very

football. Still, old timers still call 'em the Bows.) Sent from my
