The Kekauluohi Building, home of the Hawaii State Archives, on the grounds
of 'Iolani Palace. I stopped in to research the "urban fossil" at S. King

tax maps from 1959, but no name for what building or business stood there.

Urban Fossil?

For the history sleuths at HawaiiThreads, here's a shot from the corner of
Bethel and S. King streets, looking east at the makai block between Bethel
and Fort steets. The historic building on the corner is the McCandless
Building (925 Bethel St.), build in 1906. The unmarked ground floor office
is home to Group 70 International, an architectural firm. The mystery
building at Fort St. is visible on the left.

Urban Fossil?

Another shot of the gutted building at S. King. and Fort streets. The red
brick "shadow" inside the east wall seems to be only skin deep, as the rest
of the structure seems to be your basic steel and concrete cube.

Urban Fossil?

This drab, square annex to Pioneer Plaza (at Fort and S. King streets) in
downtown Honolulu is being substantially renovated. Curiously, inside the
concrete east wall, the profile of a smaller, slant-roofed brick building
has been revealed. I wonder if this is the "shadow" of a building that once
stood against another, or if the concrete structure was built on top of the
shell of the brick one.

Fridge

Since someone asked... Our new Kenmore refrigerator, a side-by-side
29-cu.-ft. model in basic white. In-door ice and water (Pur filtered),
Acceler-Ice mode and removable bucket (for those hopping parties), 'Ultra
Chill Zone' (a door shelf blasted with air from the freezer compartment),
digital thermostat, nifty 'Fresh n Ready' fruit bin (tip-out with
removable, strainer-base compartments), and various other touches both the
kids and I are mesmerized by. Don't expect it will be this clean for long!

Wireless

The city, in a pilot project with Earthlink, plans to offer free Wi-Fi in
Chinatown for a year. It's supposed to be up and running later this summer.
Even before they're up and running, though, wireless signals abound in the
neighborhood. At least 13 SSIDs are broadcasting near N. King and Smith
streets. More than half, I'm happy to say, had some form of security (WPA,
WEP, etc.). Not all neighborhoods are so cautious. See the Secure 'IKE
wardriving report at SecureIKE.org.

Lunch

Lunch with my dad at Brew Moon. Nice and quiet, as it wasn't busy, but
perhaps there's a reason given the so-so service. But, I don't get the
feeling people go there for the service, or the food, anyway. Sure is
snazzy looking.

Our 16-year-old refridgerator died today. We realized it was dead at 5

delivery is on Wednesday. We're going to be eating a lot of egg salad
sandwiches this week!

Surfboards

The surfboards I spotted last week in the McClain's Auctions space at 1 N.
King Street were quite a draw today, as a surf shop's inventory was
liquidated. A line formed over the prospects of a Spider surfboard for
under $300. I guess that's a good price. Surfboards downtown... another
reason to love Hawaii.
