Drenched
Bizarre. I'm still soaked from my last walk downtown, where the rain was as
bad as I'd ever seen it. Dark skies, freezing wind, lightning and
thunder... yet suddenly the skies are blue and the sun is out. Compare this
photo to the one taken from the exact same spot just three hours earlier.
I've never seen anything like it.

Lunch
Lunch with dad at Jimbo's at 1936 S. King Street, famous for its house-made
udon. I had the hot udon and oyako donburi (chicken and egg on rice) combo.
Perfect for another rainy day.

Towers
The changing Honolulu skline. Despite the dreadful weather, construction
continues apace on 46-story twin towers of the Moana Pacific (left), while
the recently completed Hokua (right) looms 40 stories over Kakaako. Over a
dozen condominium towers are planned for the area, reminding many of the
'80s when we said the construction crane was the state bird.

Lunch at The Gazebo, the restaurant inside the downtown Macy's store.
They're a little backed up today. Out of fries too -- they're substituting
a hot dog.

Extra
In a short flashback scene for the character Locke in next week's episode
of "Lost," this dorky guy served as Orange County Pedestrian #17 outside
the fictional Southland Savings Bank (a.k.a. the old City Bank space at the
corner of Alakea and Merchant streets). If the scene makes the final cut,
watch for him... among the other unrecognizable blurry smudges in the
background.

Wandering east of Waikiki before sunrise, waiting for the start of Hawaii's
Walk For Diabetes, in which my employer proudly participates. Hey, arrive
before 6 a.m., and the parking isn't a problem. Here, a view of Waikiki
from near the War Natatorium.

Coco Ichibanya
A few weeks ago, after taking my mom's car in to Jiffy Lube, I walked over
to the Coco Ichibanya Curry House in Puck's Alley. l was a regular there
while finishing up my journalism degree at UH more than five years ago.
Wouldn't you know it, the co-proprietor/server/cashier, Margaret, still
remembered me after all that time. We caught up, talked about our kids, and
reminisced about the good ol' days of lunch specials and the famous
20-minute, 1,600-gram curry challenge.
